Seeding rates are published per 1,000 square feet, and they differ several times over between grasses — 1 to 2 lb for bermudagrass against 6 to 8 lb for tall fescue. So the first thing this calculator asks is not how big your lawn is, but what you are planting.

How it works

Measure the area to be seeded in square feet and divide by 1,000. That gives the number of rate-units your lawn represents.

Multiply by the published rate for the grass you are sowing. University extension services publish these per species, and this calculator reports the full range they give rather than picking a single number out of it — the low end for good seedbed conditions, the high end where the surface is rough or the season is short.

The rates here are for establishing a new lawn from bare soil. Overseeding an existing lawn uses less seed, but no extension source publishes a per-species overseeding rate we could verify, so this calculator does not offer one rather than invent it.

Formula: Seed (lb) = area ft² ÷ 1,000 × seeding rate for your species

Measuring on site

  • Measure the lawn, not the lot. Subtract the house, the driveway, beds and anything else that will not be seeded — on a typical suburban lot, that is often a third of the total.
  • Break an irregular lawn into rectangles and add them. Small errors matter less here than in a material you order by the ton: a 10% area error changes a 5 lb bag order by half a pound.
  • Buy by pure live seed where the label gives it. A bag with 85% germination and 95% purity delivers about 81% of its weight as viable seed, so a cheap bag can need more weight to do the same job.

Waste and what it covers

Seed is not wasted the way a poured material is, so there is no waste factor here. What there is instead is the published range: seed at the high end when the seedbed is rough, when you are sowing late in the season, or when birds are a problem, and at the low end on a well-prepared bed in ideal conditions.

Questions

How much grass seed do I need for 1,000 square feet?
It depends entirely on the grass. Kentucky bluegrass needs 2 to 3 lb, perennial ryegrass and fine fescue 4 to 5 lb, and turf-type tall fescue 6 to 8 lb. Bermudagrass and zoysiagrass need only 1 to 2 lb, because their seed is far smaller and each seed spreads by runners once established.
How much seed for a quarter acre lawn?
A quarter acre is 10,890 ft², so about 10.9 rate-units. In tall fescue that is 65 to 87 lb of seed; in Kentucky bluegrass, 22 to 33 lb. Remember to subtract the house and driveway — the seeded area is usually much smaller than the lot.
What happens if I put down too much seed?
Overseeding beyond the published rate crowds the seedlings, and they compete with each other for water and light instead of filling in. The result is a thin, disease-prone stand rather than a thicker lawn. The published rates are upper bounds worth respecting.
Can I use this for overseeding an existing lawn?
Not reliably. Overseeding uses less seed than a new lawn, but the commonly repeated figure of 'half the new-lawn rate' has no published source behind it. Your local extension office can give a rate for your grass and region; we would rather point you there than publish a number we cannot cite.
