Plywood Calculator
A sheet of plywood covers 32 square feet, so it is tempting to divide the area by 32 and round up. That division is what sends people back to the yard: it assumes every offcut gets used somewhere. This calculator lays whole sheets over the area instead, and prints the division underneath so you can see the gap.
How it works
A standard structural panel is 48 × 96 in — the traditional nominal size APA describes for the product — which is 4 × 8 ft, or 32 ft². Whole sheets are what you buy and whole sheets are what you carry home. Worth knowing: no standard actually mandates that dimension. PS 1 and PS 2 set the tolerance against whatever length and width the manufacturer states, and panels trademarked SIZED FOR SPACING are made a touch under, at 47-7/8 × 95-7/8 in, so they can be gapped on installation. That is a quarter of a percent, and since this page counts whole sheets it never moves the answer.
Count the sheets by laying them out, not by dividing. A 12 × 12 ft room is 144 ft², and 144 ÷ 32 is 4.5, so the division says 5 sheets. Lay them out and it takes 6: three 4 ft widths across the room, two 8 ft lengths along it. No arrangement of 5 sheets covers that floor. The calculator tries the sheet both ways round and reports the better fit, so a 12 × 16 ft floor — which tiles exactly — comes back as 6 rather than 8.
The division still appears, under the headline, as the count you would reach if every offcut got used somewhere. On a plain rectangle where you can rip the leftovers into the next course, that figure is real. On a roof with hips and a dormer, it is not.
Thickness does not enter the count, but it does affect what you order. A panel sold as 3/4 in is stamped 23/32 in: 3/4 is the nominal call-out and 23/32 in is the Performance Category, the actual thickness the standard holds the panel to. The difference is 1/32 in — irrelevant for one sheet, visible where a subfloor meets a slab or a stair nosing.
Formula: Sheets = ⌈length ÷ 4 ft⌉ × ⌈width ÷ 8 ft⌉, or the same the other way round — whichever is fewer
Measuring on site
- Measure the surface you are sheathing, not the room. A floor is the room; a wall is the stud run by the plate height; a roof plane is the rafter length by the run, which is longer than the plan dimension.
- Note which way the sheets will run before you order. The calculator assumes one orientation throughout and picks the cheaper of the two; mixing orientations on the same job can occasionally save a sheet, and turning the sheets the other way on site can cost you one.
- Subtract openings only if they are large. A door or window under a sheet's worth of area rarely removes a sheet, because the cut-out is scrap once you have framed around it.
Waste and what it covers
No trade association or manufacturer publishes a recommended waste percentage for plywood, so this calculator applies none behind your back and prints no default we could not cite. The allowance is yours to set — and note what it is for here: the laid-out count already carries the offcuts, so the percentage covers damaged panels and mistakes, not cutting. A rectangular floor needs little; a site where sheets get walked on and rained on needs more.

Questions
- How many sheets of plywood for a 12x12 room?
- Six. The area division says five — 144 ft² ÷ 32 is 4.5 — but no arrangement of five 4 × 8 ft sheets covers a 12 × 12 ft floor. Laid out it is three sheets across by two along, so six, with 48 ft² of offcut. Five is the right answer only if you can use every one of those offcuts somewhere else on the job.
- How many square feet is a 4x8 sheet of plywood?
- 32 ft². The panel measures 48 × 96 in, which is 4,608 in², and 4,608 divided by 144 in² per square foot is exactly 32.
- Why is 3/4 inch plywood actually 23/32 inch?
- Because 3/4 in is a nominal call-out and 23/32 in is the Performance Category — the thickness the panel is manufactured and tested to. The two describe the same product, and the 1/32 in gap only matters where the panel has to meet something at a set height.
- How much extra plywood should I buy for waste?
- That is your call, and we will not print a number we cannot cite. Nothing published by the wood-products associations sets a percentage. Note also what the allowance is for on this page: the laid-out count already carries the cutting waste, so the percentage is there for damaged panels and mistakes.
